Shout Joyfully

Description

NOTE: This album is currently available as YouTube playlist only (see below).

Contemporary Christian music album by New Jerusalem, an Ann Arbor-based evangelistic singing group sponsored by Youth for Christ. NJ was a regular fixture of area Youth for Christ rallies, and sang at a great number of area churches, venues and events. This is the first of New Jerusalemʻs two albums.

New Jerusalem was comprised of different members through the years, and at the time of this recording, the group members were: John Boshoven, Thomas “Hoppy” Colvin, Doug Howell, Bobbi Page, Claudia Tull, Barbara Young, J. Hunter Raiford (sound engineer).

2022 Notes

From John Boshoven

As a young 20’s guy, a recording studio was the bomb. Sure, I already did a local radio show heading toward syndication, but making an album seemed so much more permanent. Singing alongside my friends who were so talented nudged me to also be my best. Performing in public made me grow up and sing out! [ed. – At the time of this writing, John is the Coordinator of College Counseling, Ann Arbor Public Schools, MI]

From Doug Howell

In August 1973 I became music director for Huron Valley Youth for Christ. I’d quit the university after three years to do the job (I wouldn’t finish my degree for another seven years). We had five music acts that would be traveling as musical ambassadors for YFC across the area, singing at churches, inviting people to become more involved in area ministries and to attend monthly rallies at a local high school. According to my journal, we’d planned on recording an album for each of the five acts, eventually. New Jerusalem was one of the acts, I was another. And as it turned out, we were the only two to record albums.

I had already met Mike Kuzma, the album’s producer, at a local church during my freshman year, and he immediately began to encourage me to record. He was also friends with others in New Jerusalem, and so we relied on him to bring the Shout Joyfully album together. Later, he produced my Bluer Than It’s Ever Been album (and four albums after that).

NJ traveled all over southeastern Michigan, performing in all sorts of events, venues and audiences, for church groups of many different denominations. I’ll always remember this as one of the most spiritually rich—and eye-opening—periods of my life. Perhaps not what you’d usually expect from attendance at a state university, but that’s what happened. NJ and the other acts performed often at the large monthly YFC rallies.

Shout Joyfully was released in 1974. That summer, we sang at an outdoor July 4th rally in Livonia, Michigan. Good News Circle was on the same program and we had the privilege of meeting the group members and enjoying each other’s music. Later that summer, GNC called me out of the blue and invited me to join their group.

Although it was an incredibly hard decision, I felt it was the right one. After I left for GNC that fall, New Jerusalem kept going for a couple of years, evolving as several different group members came and went. They recorded a second album, Victory in Jesus, in 1979. I produced it, and besides NJ, it included soloists Lonnie Hull and Don Wharton.

New Jerusalem will always hold a special place in my heart and memory, having introduced me or helped me grow closer to some remarkable people, many of whom remain close friends to this day. I’d like to dedicate this YouTube incarnation of the no-longer-available album to the two dear NJ members who have gone ahead into their further life with God: Thomas Stricker “Hoppy” Colvin III, who played bass, wrote one of these songs, and generally kept us looking up; and Barbara Young, who played flute and sang like an angel (and looked like one, too). We love you, and will always remember you fondly.

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth
Serve the Lord with gladness
Come before Him with joyful singing
Know that the Lord Himself is God
It is He who has made us
And not we ourselves
We are His people
And the sheep of His pasture
