The Lord’s Prayer (St. Barnabas Mass)

music by Doug Howell (Spring 2014) • © 2015 Creative Measures LLC
adapted from the Book of Common Prayer (1979), Rite 2, Eucharistic Prayer B

Our Father,
who art in heaven,
holy is your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day
our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins
as we forgive.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil,
for the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever.
Amen.

2018 Notes

It’s taken me six months to get my musical act together enough (after retiring from my day job) to unleash some new music on the world.

After writing a few other musical settings for worship at St. Barnabas in Chelsea, Michigan over the last dozen years, David challenged me to write a complete musical setting for the mass. (He wants a Requiem, too, but I told him I’d just start with a plain old mass first.) \

Well, I accepted the challenge, and it was celebrated for the first time on St. Barnabas Day in 2015, dedicated to the brothers and sisters at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. The Lord’s Prayer has always been my favorite piece from the setting, and this recording has been on my To Do list ever since. I recorded the piano part back in Michigan over a year ago, but didn’t have time to add the other parts and the vocal until recently.

For so many reasons, I decided there couldn’t be a more fitting choice for my first new song from Hawai‘i. I hope it’s a blessing to you, and draws you closer to both God and neighbor.
